Electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh are set to receive major relief in the new year, as the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has issued the Cost Data Book2025, significantly reducing the prices of smart prepaid meters.

Under the revised rates, the cost of a single-phase smart prepaid meter has been cut from Rs 6,016 to Rs 2,800, while the price of a three-phase meter has been reduced from Rs 11,342 to Rs 4,100. This move is expected to lower the cost of new electricity connections by more than 50 per cent.

The Commission has also simplified the process of obtaining new power connections by introducing a fixed charge system, replacing the earlier estimate-based mechanism. Under the new system, consumers can obtain connections by paying a predetermined fee based on factors such as distance, load, and other parameters, making the process faster and more transparent.

Special relief has been extended to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families and economically weaker consumers. For these categories, processing fees and security deposits have been waived, and the option to pay charges in instalments has been provided.

In addition, the cost of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) will not be recovered from consumers, as it is being funded under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). Consumers who obtained new electricity connections at the old rates after September 9, 2025, will also be eligible for benefits under the revised pricing.

UPERC has directed power distribution companies to implement the new rates by January 12, 2026, after updating their software systems. Consumers can avail of the benefits through the UPPCL website, mobile app, or by visiting local electricity offices after the implementation date, Chief Engineer Rakesh Kumar Pandey said.
