A man posting as an IAS officer was arrested in Gorakhpur on Thursday, December 11, according to police officials. The accused, identified as Lalit Kishor, is a resident of Sitamarhi, Bihar, who posed as an IAS officer ‘Gaurav Kumar’.
According to the police, Kishor allegedly created a full-fledged racket involving fake inspections, promises of tenders and jobs and large-scale extortion. Besides Lalit Kishor, his brother-in-law Abhishek Kumar and aide Parmanand Gupta have also been put behind bars by the police.
To maintain the illusion of legitimacy, he traveled in vehicles equipped with flashing beacons, used counterfeit government license plates, and employed a substantial entourage: 10 gunmen, each paid Rs 30,000 monthly, and a stenographer earning Rs 60,000, according to police reports.
Moreover, several forged IDs, laptops, jewellery, cash, and many AI-generated photos showing Lalit Kishor replacing real officials were also seized at the time of his arrest.
How Did The Fraud Come To Limelight?
The fraud was exposed by an anonymous complaint that revealed that Lalit Kishor had been living in a rented house in Chiluatal and running an office in Jhungiya Bazar.
‘Fake Inspections’ At Schools
During his time as an IAS officer, Lalit Kishor allegedly conducted fake ‘inspections’ at private schools and extorted large sums from their operators. In one instance, his aides reportedly demanded up to Rs 55 lakh from a school in Bhatat.
Furthermore, he duped people across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh, according to the police. One complainant from Patna claimed that he paid over Rs 1.70 crore and two vehicles for tenders.
"Fake IAS officer Lalit Kishor and his two associates have been arrested and sent to jail ... anyone who has been duped is urged to approach the police office and file a complaint," Additional SP, City Abhinav Tyagi, who is investigating the matter, said.
