Uttar Pradesh is grappling with severe heatwave conditions, with several cities witnessing record temperatures. The maximum temperature in Jhansi soared to 49 degrees Celsius. This intense heat shattered all previous regional records, surpassing the previous high of 48.2 degrees set in 1984. The mercury reached 48.6 degrees Celsius in Agra, breaking a 26-year-old record. Similarly, Prayagraj recorded a temperature of 48.2 degrees Celsius, surpassing a 30-year record.

Senior meteorologist Atul Kumar Singh emphasised that this is the first time in 132 years that Jhansi has experienced such high temperatures in May. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Uttar Pradesh warning of high temperatures, with no immediate relief expected on Wednesday and Thursday.

Other cities in Uttar Pradesh are also grappling with scorching temperatures. Hamirpur recorded 48.2 degrees, Kanpur 47.6 degrees, Varanasi 47.6 degrees, Orai 47.2 degrees, Fatehpur 47.2 degrees, Churk 46.2 degrees, Bulandshahr 46 degrees, Aligarh 45.8 degrees, Kanpur City 45.2 degrees, Fursatganj 45.2 degrees and Etawah 45 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, starting Thursday, easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are expected to bring relief, gradually decreasing the intensity of the heatwave. Additionally, rain in the Terai regions will contribute to lowering temperatures. By June 1, Jhansi and other parts of the state should experience some respite from the scorching conditions.

In Purvanchal, weather changes are anticipated to begin on Thursday. Gorakhpur and Basti divisions are likely to receive rain, followed by light to moderate showers in Devipatan and Azamgarh on Friday. The Ayodhya division will also benefit from this weather shift, providing relief from the oppressive heat. Lucknow and surrounding areas can expect cloud cover from May 31 to June 2, further contributing to the temperature drop.
