The Paonta Sahib highway has been reopened to traffic after a nine-day closure. Connectivity was severed when a bridge near Nanda Ki Chowki was damaged on September 15.
The Public Works Department (PWD) restored traffic late Wednesday night by constructing a 470-meter-long temporary culvert and approach road. Initially, only light vehicles were allowed to cross as a precautionary measure.
Construction of the temporary route faced delays. Although the PWD aimed to complete the culvert within two days, high water levels, even after channelising the river, slowed down the process of laying Hume pipes. Work accelerated once the rain stopped, allowing for the quick completion of the culvert.
The reopening has brought significant relief to local residents and business owners, who had been forced to use longer alternative routes for the past nine days, disrupting travel and commerce.

According to Rajesh Kumar, Executive Engineer of the PWD Provincial Division, vehicles must cross the temporary culvert at a controlled speed. He cautioned that traffic might be halted during heavy rainfall or if the river's water level rises. The process of reconstructing the permanent bridge is now underway, and heavy vehicles were expected to be permitted to use the temporary route starting Thursday morning.
