In a significant step for the welfare of persons with disabilities, the Uttarakhand government has decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to couples marrying a person with a disability, or in the case of marriage between two persons with disabilities.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Previously, the grant under this category was Rs 25,000, while other marriage assistance schemes provided Rs 50,000.

The Social Welfare Department currently runs several marriage grant schemes, including those for daughters of Scheduled Castes/Tribes, daughters of destitute widows, daughters of abandoned or mentally disabled women, inter-caste marriages, and marriages to persons with disabilities.

The cabinet’s decision to double the grant seeks to remove disparities across schemes and promote social dignity for persons with disabilities.
