Luxury cars with attractive registration numbers are a common sight on city roads, but for 1,552 applicants, securing a VIP number has turned into a frustrating ordeal in Gautam Buddh Nagar. Despite applying online and depositing Rs 1.43 crore collectively, these vehicle owners have yet to receive their numbers or a refund.
The Gautam Buddh Nagar transport department had conducted an e-auction for VIP numbers in 2024, attracting businesspeople, professionals, and young entrepreneurs who bid up to Rs 1 lakh for their preferred numbers. However, many applicants did not receive the allotted numbers, leaving their money locked in the department's treasury.
Applicants have repeatedly visited the transport office seeking refunds, but the situation remains unresolved. Currently, the department is only accepting written requests, with no clear timeline for returning the funds.
ARTO (Administration) Dr Siyaram Verma explained that the process is fully online and that records of payments are maintained in Lucknow. Complaints are forwarded via email to Lucknow for further action.
With months passing without a resolution, the patience of VIP number enthusiasts is wearing thin, as the promise of refunds continues to remain unfulfilled.
