Rohit Sahni has been sentenced to imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life for the rape and murder of a student. In a remarkably swift trial, the court delivered the sentence just 120 days after the crime. A locket belonging to the victim, found in the accused's possession, played a pivotal role in securing the conviction.
The court heard that the locket had obstructed Sahni as he was slitting the student's throat. He snatched it from her neck and placed it in his pocket. When police recovered the blood-stained locket, it became the central piece of evidence against him.
The Decisive Evidence: A Mother's Identification
A Test Identification (TI) Parade was conducted on June 10 to formally identify the locket. During the procedure, the victim's mother immediately picked out her daughter's locket. When the presiding magistrate asked how she could be certain, she pointed out pre-existing holes in the locket as unique identifying marks, solidifying the evidence.
Following this identification, Investigating Officer Anjali Kumari filed a comprehensive 101-page charge sheet in the special court. In his confessional statement, Sahni admitted that he was married and had completed the eighth standard.
Court Proceedings And Reaction
Throughout the trial, 15 witnesses testified for the prosecution, including the victim's mother, medical experts from SKMCH and PMCH, and forensic specialists. In contrast, four witnesses testified for the defense, including Sahni's mother and sister.
During the sentencing, Rohit Sahni showed no remorse, maintaining a calm demeanor. His mother, however, pleaded with the court for her son's forgiveness while she and other relatives wept. The court, presented with solid evidence by the police, handed down the harshest possible sentence. This outcome serves as a powerful message that criminals will not be spared.

Action Taken Against Medical Negligence
The case also brought to light serious lapses in the victim's medical care. Consequently, the Superintendent of SKMCH was removed from her position on government orders, and the Deputy Superintendent of PMCH was suspended. A committee was established to investigate the negligence. In response to the tragedy, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha visited the victim's family on June 5 and instructed the District Magistrate to take all necessary actions.
