In response to the escalating rate of cybercrimes in the state, the government has decided to deploy Cyber Forensic Commandos across every police station. This initiative aims to curb incidents where criminals use evolving and sophisticated methods to defraud the public of their life savings.
Deployment And Selection Process
Under the first phase of this scheme, two Cyber Forensic Commandos will be stationed at each of the state's 166 police stations. To fulfill this requirement, 350 personnel possessing an Information Technology background will be selected from the current police force. While a state-level Cyber Crime Unit is already operational, the implementation of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita has necessitated granular investigations at the local police station level.
Roles And Responsibilities
The primary mandate of these commandos will be to investigate crimes within their specific jurisdictions using modern scientific methods. Their duties will include the forensic examination of digital devices involved in crimes, such as mobile phones, laptops, hard disks, and CCTV systems. These specialists will be responsible for visiting crime scenes to preserve digital evidence and perform data recovery. Subsequently, they will forward the collected evidence to a central team, which will conduct the detailed technical analysis.
Specialised Training
To effectively address challenges such as network tracking, hacking patterns, and online fraud, the police department will provide rigorous training to the selected personnel. The curriculum will cover digital forensics, networking, threat intelligence, and cryptography, ensuring the commandos can effectively collect and handle evidence.
Official Status
The deployment of these specialists is expected to significantly expedite the resolution of cybercrime cases. According to Home Secretary Shailesh Bagauli, a meeting with the Police Headquarters has already been conducted regarding this phase, and an action plan is currently being formulated to implement the scheme on the ground.
