The Uttarakhand government is set to launch 191 new parking projects to ease traffic congestion in the state, as the promotion of year-round tourism and pilgrimage has made the challenge of parking at tourist sites a year-long issue. In the last ten years, the number of parking facilities in the state has increased from 20 to 49, which is considered to be low as per the annual influx of nearly 11 crore tourists.
The project includes the adoption of innovative models like tunnel parking, an experiment being conducted for the first time in Uttarakhand. Once these projects are completed, more than 16,000 vehicles will be able to be parked simultaneously in the state.

The Housing Department is rapidly moving forward with the plan for vehicle parking projects. The proposed 191 parking sites in Uttarakhand include 65 surface, 107 multi-level, nine automated, and 10 tunnel parking facilities.
Sites have been identified for these, and DPRs (Detailed Project Reports) for 141 parking sites have been prepared, while a budget of Rs 1,73,34,00,000 has been released for 112 projects, and work has commenced.
DP Singh, the Joint Chief Administrator of the Uttarakhand Housing and Urban Development Authority, stated that the state government is moving towards tunnel parking to solve the parking problem in the mountains. These tunnels will be developed in such a way that vehicles will enter from one end of the road and exit back onto the road from the other end.
The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority is building on-street and off-street smart parking at seven key locations in the city: ISBT, Ghantaghar (Patel Statue), Universal Petrol Pump, Moda Element, Ashley Hall, Black Bird at Cross Road, and Gandhi Park. Several of these projects have been completed.
Meanwhile, the District Development Authority, Nainital, has constructed a surface car park for 108 vehicles on the Nainital-Kaladhungi motor road in Sukhatal. The construction of a surface parking facility for 70 vehicles in the Srikainchi Dham tehsil area has also been completed.
