Bengaluru Man Viral Post: The topic of children growing up without learning their native languages has once again caught people’s attention, thanks to a post by a Bengaluru man. Ganesh Shankar shared how his neighbour’s child speaks only in English, saying, “Neighbour’s kid converses only in English, not in Kannada or even his mother tongue, Tamil, because status, it seems. And he had an accent already.” His post struck a chord online, with many users expressing concern over how English is slowly taking over regional languages in urban homes. Some felt this was more about showing off than practical need, while others pointed out how parents often associate English fluency with success and social status.
The conversation sparked by this post reflects a deeper worry: are we unknowingly disconnecting the next generation from their roots in the name of progress?

The post, after being shared on X (Formerly Twitter) yesterday, received significant likes and comments from people. Among the replies, one detailed comment stood out. One user explained how this shift didn’t happen overnight; it took the last two decades. He highlighted three major reasons: "1. Emphasis on learning Kannada as a subject in schools isn't great. School managements discourage and some even punish kids if they speak in Kannada. 2. Due to the dubbing ban in Kannada, kids missed watching cartoons in their own language, forcing them to stick to English, Hindi, or other language cartoons. As kids, if they don't grow up watching Kannada content, they may never ever come back to Kannada. 3. Inferiority complex in parents about kids speaking in Kannada. They forced their children to speak only in English."
"This is such a sad new-age phenomenon! Same scenes here. Little kids don't understand Hindi or their mother tongue. Only English with an American accent," a second user added. "I was shocked when I saw this in Bengaluru. I know Kannadigas who speak with their children only in English (the main reason is an inferiority complex & also the desire to send kids abroad as soon as the 12th is done). Most of them living near me speak with their children in English, unfortunately," added a third user.
"You have no idea how important it is to make your children learn basic English before joining school. I was the person who used to think my kid should see only Kannada content and idnt expose much English or even speak English to him. Now that he has started school (1), added a fourth user. "It is because of the wonderful cartoon episodes in English. Tell me a single kids' program in a native language that engages the children," added a fifth user.
