Emergency Alert System: The cell phones of several people buzzed frantically after receiving the Emergency Alert notifications along with an alarming sound on September 15. The alerts were part of the emergency alert system that was being tested by the Indian Government. The notifications were broadcasted by the Cell Broadcasting System, which was sent by the Department of Telecommunication. As soon as the cell phones started to buzz, several netizens took to their social media handles to enquire about the matter. Fearing it as a possible Cyber Attack, people started asking the C-DOT for confirmation.
The test alerts were deployed by The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The alerts were flashed on some of the cell phones, where the alerts confirmed about it being a test.
“Emergency alert: SEVERE. This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent through the Cell Broadcasting System by the Department of Telecommunication, Government of India. Please ignore this message as no action is required from your end. This message has been sent to test Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by National Disaster Management Authority. It aims to enhance public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies,” the alert read.
Taking to social media, people shared screenshots of the alert notification that they received on their phones. Some enquired about the testing and tagged the official Government handles on their posts, while others shared the news about the alert to make people aware of the testing. Many netizens also took to their social media handles to confirm whether the notifications were part of some cyber attack.
