Diwali 2025: As families across India get busy cleaning every corner of their homes before Diwali, one household ended up sweeping in good fortune, literally. What began as a regular festive cleaning session turned into a jaw-dropping discovery of Rs 2 lakh in old Rs 2,000 notes. A Reddit user shared the surprising story, revealing how their mother found bundles of pink notes while dusting off an old DTH set-top box.

“During Diwali safai, my mom found Rs 2 lakh in old 2000-rupee notes… hidden inside an old DTH box probably kept there by my desi dad back in demonetisation times. We haven’t told him yet. And please suggest how to proceed further,” the user wrote, calling it the “Biggest Diwali Safai of 2025.”

For context, the Rs 2,000 note was introduced in 2016 after demonetisation but was later phased out under the Reserve Bank of India’s Clean Note Policy. While banks stopped taking them after October 7, 2023, these notes can still be exchanged at 19 RBI offices, up to Rs 20,000 at a time.

Soon, the post caught fire online, sparking laughter and curiosity. One user joked, “Bas itna paisa dede bhagwan ki Rs 2 lakh rakhke bhool jau,” while another wrote, “Feko mat ise mujhe de do!” (Don’t throw it away, give it to me!).

“They are still a legal tender despite being phased out. You can get them exchanged only at designated RBI offices with a 20,000 limit,” one commenter advised. Another added, “Get it exchanged at the RBI, it really is an easy process, but I really doubt they would accept to exchange that much money. Lekinjitna ho utnatohkro."

"Just go to your nearest RBI and exchange after filling the declaration. But remember to do it in smaller batches — exchanging Rs 2 lakh at once might attract questions,” added another user. "Gather your trustworthy friends, distribute 5k, 10k, 20k randomly and one day after another go to RBI and exchange it and transfer that amount in your bank account from them," advised another user.
