Viral Reddit Post: A Reddit post about an awkward and ironic job situation is making waves online. A man shared how a recruiter unknowingly contacted him to offer the very same role he had been laid off from, sparking laughter and frustration among users while highlighting quirks of modern corporate practices.
Titled “A recruiter tried to recruit me to replace me”, the Redditor explained that he was laid off in April after 14 years at his company. He described the move as a “bullshit cost-cutting” decision meant to boost the company’s stock price. "They need someone to do my job, so I was put on a transition plan until the end of the year. They spent 4 months trying to outsource my role to a lower-cost country. When that didn't work, they opened a role in the US, but one level below where I am. That was 3 months ago," he wrote.
Months after his layoff, the man received a LinkedIn message from a recruiter: "Today, a recruiter reached out on LinkedIn. He thought I'd be perfect for a role they were filling. I could tell from the description that it was my replacement. I asked if his client was my company and he confirmed."

He reflected on the irony, saying, “Somehow he read my LinkedIn profile closely enough to get my qualifications, without noticing I was already employed by his client.” The post quickly went viral as other users shared similar stories, turning the unusual experience into a wider conversation about corporate hiring practices and how strange modern recruitment can be.

The post received many comments from Reddit users. "Sounds like you have them over a barrel tbh. It's been 7 months and the best lead they have to replace you is... you? I think it's time to accept a few more tasks, then take 3 weeks of unprepped PTO, let your manager's manager's manager hear in their own language ($) how valuable you are, then you can talk long-term figures," a user wrote.
"The same thing happened to me. I was laid off, position eliminated. Then the company realized that the position was actually needed after all (dumbass greedy management trying to cut where it was not feasible) and so they reposted a similar position a few months later. I found this out when I received an email from a recruiter saying I was a perfect fit for this role," a second user added.

"Leave. And then when they can't replace you, go freelance and double your day rate. Consultants usually show as a different line in accounts to full-time staff," wrote a third user. "I had something similar happen. I had a 3rd party recruiter reach out on LinkedIn about another position in the company I already work for. It’s like they don’t actually read your profile. It’s probably an algorithm that says, “this person may be a good match,” but the recruiter does zero actual research," added a fourth user.
