Viral Video: Many believe that there is a thin line between a good joke and an insensitive statement. And based on what social media has seen ever since comedy and stand-up shows became popular- not every comedian is aware of this difference. Bunty Banerjee, a contestant on the hit online talent competition India's Got Latent, recently sparked a major debate on social media, which was born out of a joke that did not sit well with many. For those unaware, the joke was about actress Deepika Padukone and her depression. From raising questions on ‘what even a breakup depression is’ to making jokes on postpartum depression, the woman pulled quite a few lines that landed her in trouble on the internet.
Apart from Banerjee, netizens also took shots at comedians and judges at the show- Samay Raina, Tanmay Bhat, and more- for celebrating and laughing at the jokes, which a majority found rather insensitive and ignorant. The controversy was only getting uglier when Raina’s comment on the same further triggered people more. “Guys it’s not fair. You cannot be outraged on Twitter. Please outrage on my YouTube comments section so there is some ad revenue at least,” read the response by the show’s creator Samay Raina.
The video was shared on X (formerly Twitter), by the handle ‘V_for___’. The post was shared three days ago and pulled 4M views from people.

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “I do not support all women. Some of you b*tches would die for male validation,” a user said. “I think these women make it difficult for all women by underplaying everything we go through for male validation-our reproductive health, childbirth, break ups (here she has assumed that the reason), mental health in general, post-partum depression, pressures of being a new mom,” added a second person.
“The entire panel should be ashamed. And to see that one of the panelists is a famous neurologist Dr. Sid Warrier.. Shameful,” added a third person. “This is so bad. Indians just laugh at anything and everything,” added another. “This is so bad. People die because of depression. To laugh at someone because you think someone cooked a fake story shows how insensitive and uneducated this person is,” added another.
