Recently, amid the rising cases of workplace toxicity in almost all organisations around the world, Gen Z turned out to be the much-needed ‘beacon of hope’ as per many. Several instances came forward where young employees were seen prioritising their mental health over their work life, which either impressed people or simply triggered the rest. Exemplifying something similar, an incident went viral, where a woman employer shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation with her ‘Gen Z’ employee. The text basically informed the employer that the young employee would log in late, as he worked overtime the previous night. Criticising the practice of the employee’s ‘making up’ for the working hours, the woman chastised the way most Gen Z people work.
However, the entire thing mostly backfired, as the internet instead ‘villainised’ the boss! The post, after getting shared, received many reactions. Most people criticised the boss for making the employee overwork and still expect him to come on time, while the rest appreciated the employee for standing up for himself.
The video was shattered on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), by the handle ‘AyushiiDoshiii’. The post was captioned, “I can’t believe my junior sent me this. Today’s kids are something else. He stayed late, so now he’s going to show up late to the office to "make up" for it. What a move! I am speechless man.”
“To everyone commenting, let me clarify the situation. He was given a 3 deadline to complete a task that usually requires at least one full day of work. His working hours were from 10 AM to 7 PM, but if he wasn't able to finish within that time frame, he had to put in an barely 1.5 hours to complete the task. The issue is that he’s losing valuable time by being on his phone instead of staying focused on the work. When there’s a deadline to meet, sometimes a bit of extra time is necessary to get everything done!” the post further read. The post was shared three days ago and pulled more than 7M views from people.

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “Maybe he's trying to make sure he's as productive as possible without burning out. Younger employees sometimes bring a refreshing perspective on how to maintain efficiency without compromising their well-being!” a user said. “Choice 1 : To not force junior to work late and be a good human. Choice 2: Force to work late and then post on Twitter to get likes,” added another.
“Our profession has made this toxic exploitation the norm and widely accepted. However, there is nothing wrong with what your junior is expecting. You pay him for the hours he puts in, not for the draft. If his hours don't qualify as good enough, then YOU hired the wrong junior,” added another. “He did the right thing. Hope others learn from Him,” added another.
