Kerala Introduces First AI Teacher: With AI taking over almost every sector, it was only a matter of time before this advanced technology reached classrooms as well, and that is exactly what happened in Kerala. Believe it or not, there is an AI teacher robot trying to teach students and everyone is as shocked as the students were, after meeting with their new robot teacher! Kerala has become the first state in India to introduce an AI robot teacher, IRIS. A video of the said teacher, donning a saree and looking like a real woman, was shared online, where she was interacting with the class. IRIS made its debut in Thiruvananthapuram’s KTCT Higher Secondary School, where the robot was unveiled last month.
To make such a movie-like facility possible, the Kaduvayil Thangal Charitable Trust collaborated with Makerlabs Edutech Private Limited. The AI robot, reportedly, was designed under the NITI Aayog’s Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) project. The project aimed at promoting ‘extracurricular activities’ for the school students. The video of the AI interacting with students went viral on social media and began to trigger mixed reactions from people.
The video was shared on the social media platform Instagram, by the handle ‘Makerlabs’. The post was captioned, “Breaking Boundaries in Education: Introducing IRIS, India’s first AI Teacher Robot! based on generative AI.”
“At the forefront of innovation, Makerlabs edutech is proud to unveil our latest creation, IRIS - the AI Teacher Robot, poised to redefine the learning landscape as we know it. IRIS embodies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, inspiring confidence in more groundbreaking innovations to come,” the caption further read.

The video, soon after getting shared, went viral on social media. Most people sided with the AI being introduced as a teacher, while the rest advocated the lack of ‘humanity’ that the ‘robot teacher’ might display. The post was shared a while back and garnered hundreds of likes.

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “Amazing… Previously in movies, now it’s near our hometown,” a user said. “Well done ma boys. This is truly something that we see in movies. Never in a million years, did we ever think that we would get to see such kind of advancement in our lifetime. Amazing,” added a second person. “This looks like a scene from sci-fi movies. But honestly, AI won’t be able to instill discipline among students. As in, the robot is obviously not going to scold for misbehaviour,” added a third user.
“The fact that we are already here, in this age of AI robots teaching kids in schools, is just beyond me. This is too real and everything is going a bit too fast. I just hope we don’t lose ourselves in this race,” said a fourth.
“I think I can say for all when I say that this is way too advanced for us right now. Something that a human teacher can do, can never be overtaken by an AI. Also, what about the wholesome teacher-student bond that people often make?” asked a fifth netizen.
