Brain surgery on a 28-year-old man made headlines after the doctors performed an ‘awake craniotomy’ on the patient at Bhopal’s AIIMS Hospital. Awake craniotomy, which requires the doctors to keep the patient awake during the entire surgery to monitor their ‘motor functions’, is not one of a kind and has become a preferred one in recent years due to its results. But this one, in particular, went viral as the 28-year-old recited Hanuman Chalisa along with playing piano during the surgery, according to the reports. The man hailing from Bihar’s Buxar reportedly arrived with complaints of ‘frequent seizures’. A video of the incident was shared on social media, which went instantly viral on the internet.

The viral clip of the man showed him playing piano as the doctors continued to perform the awake craniotomy on him. The decision to perform the said type of surgery was taken after keeping in mind the patient's delicate situation as his tumour was near the motor cortex. The motor cortex is responsible for the physical movements of a human being. Despite its complex nature, the surgery went well. The doctors left no stone unturned in keeping the man busy to monitor his reactions while the tumour was being removed. From piano, Hanuman Chalisa, and newspaper reading to interactive conversations, the doctors reportedly kept their patients engaged.

The man, according to the reports, continued the said tasks while the tumour was being removed. Speaking about the successful operation, Neurosurgery Associate Professor Dr Sumit Raj updated on the man’s condition and said that he has fully recovered. “The tumour has been removed successfully and the patient is recovering fully. He has shown no signs of adverse effects from the procedure and has full control of his motor functions,” she was quoted as saying in media reports.
