Specially-Abled Man Viral Video: Imagine stepping out for a routine metro ride and ending up questioning how safe a city really is. That’s exactly what happened to one wheelchair user in Mumbai, and his late-night experience has now left the internet deeply shaken. The man, Karn Shah, who shared his story on Instagram, wasn’t asking for special treatment. He just wanted to get home. But at Worli metro station, his journey came to a sudden halt. The lift meant for wheelchair users wasn’t working, and there was no quick solution in sight. Minutes passed, then more time. Nearly 45 minutes later, he was still stuck.

In the video, he calmly explains the situation while clearly frustrated. "So, I’m at the Worli metro station and the lift is not working over here, and it’s been over 45 minutes since I have been standing here. Unfortunately, there is only one lift in Worli which is functional." When he reached out for help, the advice he claims he received felt careless and dangerous. "The only response I have gotten is ki 'aap ghar pe paidal chale jao,' on my wheelchair, on the busy main road where the cars are going, the bikes are going, the buses are going. And they expect me to go from this road all the way to Dadar from Worli.”

Trying to stay calm, he kept dialling the emergency helpline, hoping someone would step in. But that hope quickly faded. “I have been calling their emergency number. I have almost called twice or thrice. They say they will connect you with someone, it rings for two seconds, and the call automatically disconnects. No one is picking up the call on the emergency numbers.”

By the time he finally left the station, the night had become physically and emotionally exhausting. On the road, with traffic rushing past, he struggled to find even the most basic facilities. “So, I’m on the road now, and I want to use the washroom very badly. Nothing is accessible. There is no bathroom over here that is accessible for a wheelchair. And now I am on my way back home. I don’t know what to say. I think this has been the most horrific night of my life.”

"Tonight I wasn’t scared because I’m disabled. I was scared because the system failed me at every step. Lifts, helplines, roads, washrooms—everything made me feel disabled. Living in the current century shouldn’t feel this unsafe. Accessibility is not luxury infrastructure. It’s basic human dignity," the caption read.

The video was shared on Instagram just a day ago and received 2 million views from users. "This is just terrible. This needs to be fixed. Thank you for raising this, and so sorry you had to go through this," a user wrote. "That’s the problem with selective outrage… don’t make a joke on disability but make the facilities so poor that you make the joke out of them," a second user wrote. "Your hands were shivering. Oh, dear, I cried watching this, I know how lonely you would have felt," wrote a third user.

"Watching this is heartbreaking and infuriating. The system in our country needs to do better. This is basic human dignity. Hope you’re doing fine now, please take care," added a fourth user. "It's 2026, and we still do not have access and are unable to understand how important these little things are for our friends who need help.. And then are reply to lack or breakdown is just a script read and not actually understanding or giving advice that can help," another user added.

The clip has now sparked outrage and reflection online. For many viewers, this wasn’t just one man’s bad night: it was a reminder that accessibility failures don’t inconvenience people, they endanger them. And until systems change, stories like this will keep going viral for all the wrong reasons.
