MrBeast On Mexico Backlash: Popular YouTuber MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has finally spoken out after facing backlash for his latest adventure video shot in Mexico. Titled “I Survived 100 Hours in an Ancient Temple”, the video was released on 10 May and quickly racked up millions of views, but also stirred controversy. In the video, MrBeast and his crew explored ancient Mayan sites in Southeastern Mexico, swam in cenotes, tasted traditional Maya food, and even spent a night inside a temple. While fans loved the thrilling content, critics, especially some Mexican officials and archaeologists, accused him of using cultural heritage for profit.
The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) confirmed they gave permission to film but said they didn’t approve using the video for promotions or to boost MrBeast’s brand. Over the weekend, MrBeast clapped back at the criticism with a clear statement. He said the video’s purpose was to celebrate and create excitement about Mexican and Mayan culture.
“I’ve seen a lot of stories about our recent video in Mexico and wanted to clear some false things being said,” he posted on X. “Me and My team have great respect for the Mexican and Mayan culture and people. We are not and have never been sued by them lol. That is false, and it saddens me to see people spreading lies.” He explained that everything was done by the book. They had all the permits, followed rules strictly, and even had government officials and archaeologists with them during the shoot to make sure everything was respectful and accurate.

MrBeast also addressed the Feastables scene from the video. “They were aware of us mentioning Feastables in the video but for respect of the sites, it was filmed off-site from any national monuments,” he said. “The dinner scene where I made the Feastables joke was not near any Mayan temples.”
What many didn’t know is that MrBeast and his team actually helped fund water projects and wells for local communities during their trip. “We also never planned on sharing this, but as always, my hand is forced by false headlines,” he wrote.

He also posted a message from Layda Sansores, the Governor of Campeche, thanking him for visiting and appreciating how his video brought attention to the region. She praised the effort to highlight the beauty and culture of the area.

Still, not everyone is convinced. Mexico’s Ministry of Culture said they are reviewing the situation and may take legal steps. INAH also noted that while permission was granted, some scenes, like drone shots or a helicopter landing near the Kukulkan pyramid, may have been edited in later.
Despite the drama, MrBeast hopes people see the real message behind his content. “I hope to go back someday and continue to share how awesome the culture is with the world, sad to see this get distorted.”
