Nihilist Penguin’s Death March: The newest social media phenomenon is a lone penguin strolling away from its colony into distant mountains. The video, which was taken from a 2007 documentary, has gone popular due to its spooky soundtrack along with its existential and deep message. The video, dubbed the Nihilist Penguin, shows the bird peacefully waddling away from food and company in an environment where survival is almost impossible.
The penguin's viral video is taken from the 2007 documentary Encounters at the End of the World by Werner Herzog. It concludes that the penguin is unlikely to survive outside of its colony after describing its walk as a 'death march.' Millions of social media users have shared and re-posted the video, frequently adding their own interpretations of the penguin's march.
What is this death march and is science providing a far easier explanation, or is the penguin truly experiencing an existential crisis? Moreso, why are people relating to this bird's lone walk?
Why Are Netizens Relating To Penguin?
The penguin has been called a 'nihilist' due to its association with human behaviour and emotions. The penguin's suicidal journey best embodies nihilism, which is sometimes defined as rejecting life's intrinsic value.
The death march has been seen as a representation of burnout and existential crises. Many have used this penguin as metaphor for 'quiet quitting' or leaving the 'rat race'.
Nihilist Penguin Meme vs Reality
The video is currently the most popular trend among young people who use social media. It dealt with contemporary concerns and the wish to resist social constraints. The penguin's solitary walk and apparent hopelessness have resonated with people. Nevertheless, memes and amusing edits have taken over the internet.

I love that they are posting all of this including Werner Herzog’s clip about a “deranged” penguin marching towards “certain death”. It is a great point they are making about where America is heading under this administration. https://t.co/vZF1H8URWL pic.twitter.com/UDXJup5E3S

In the vast Antarctic expanse of life, sometimes you just gotta be that nihilist penguin—waddling away from the colony toward your own existential horizon. Who's with me? #NihilistPenguin #EmbraceTheVoid #penguin pic.twitter.com/HB1yxs1MOl

Emperor Penguins usually only live 20 years and March of the Penguins was filmed ~15 years ago so most of the penguins are dead and will never know we loved them enough to make a March of The Penguins 2 pic.twitter.com/rRzxR5Mueu

The penguin has come to represent existential fatigue, walking away from expectations, feeling lost in life, and silent revolt.
