As one of the most awaited celebrations around the world, Christmas is steeped in beloved traditions, with one figure standing out above all – the jolly, gift-giving Santa Claus. His red suit, white beard, and cheerful laughter have become synonymous with holiday joy. But behind this iconic character lies a real man whose generosity and kindness sparked the global legend we know today. For the first time in nearly 1,700 years, scientists have managed to unveil the face of the man who inspired Santa Claus.
Using cutting-edge techniques and data extracted from his skull, researchers have ‘forensically recreated’ the face of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the real-life bishop known for his acts of charity and devotion. This groundbreaking discovery brings the historical figure of Saint Nicholas to life, offering a glimpse into the man whose legacy continues to inspire the spirit of Christmas around the world.

Santa's Iconic Look
The team used statistical projections and anatomical techniques to create a scientifically accurate facial reconstruction of Saint Nicholas. Lead author Cicero Moraes described the resulting image as having a ‘strong and gentle face’, which closely matches descriptions in the 1823 poem ‘A Visit From St. Nicholas’. The reconstructed face features a broad structure and thick beard, resembling the modern image of Santa Claus.
Saint Nicholas, the Christian saint known for his gift-giving, inspired the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, which later merged with the English Father Christmas to create the modern Santa Claus. Despite his popularity, there was no proper description of his appearance until now.

Using forensic techniques, researchers have revealed a face closely resembling the saint’s. The saint’s broad, robust face and thick beard resemble the iconic image of Santa Claus.
