AI’s Ghibli-Style AI Feature Goes Viral: OpenAI’s latest GPT-4o model has gained massive attention for its ability to create anime-style images inspired by Studio Ghibli. The trend exploded after OpenAI’s founder, Sam Altman, updated his X (formerly Twitter) profile with a Ghibli-style AI-generated image.
White House Joins The Trend, Faces Backlash:
In an attempt to ride the trend, the White House shared a Ghibli-style AI meme featuring Virginia Basora-Gonzalez, a convicted drug dealer. The post, made as a reply to another White House post on X, immediately sparked debate online.
Who Is Virginia Basora-Gonzalez?
Basora-Gonzalez was first arrested by the DEA in Pennsylvania for illegally possessing over 40 grams of fentanyl. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to more than a year in prison, followed by supervised release. However, before serving her full sentence, she was deported to the Dominican Republic in 2020. Despite this, she illegally re-entered the U.S. and was later arrested outside a restaurant in Philadelphia, where she was allegedly working as a cook. ICE confirmed her arrest, stating it was part of their efforts to enhance public safety.

Mixed Reactions Online:
The meme drew divided opinions. Some social media users were shocked that an official government account engaged in internet trends, calling it inappropriate. Others defended the move, saying it helped highlight law enforcement actions.
One user expressed outrage, writing, "I didn’t serve my country for this appalling, third-world bullshit. This is disgusting. You’re monsters." Another criticized the government’s approach, saying, "I missed when the government was professional and not ‘lol memes.’" Others found the move embarrassing, with one user commenting, "Embarrassing to be posting such slop from this account." Another added, "This is horrible leadership. I’m on board with strict borders. But mocking them? This is embarrassing and shameful."
While many criticised the White House’s post, some users supported the message behind it. One user wrote, "This is phenomenal. If you're here illegally, this can happen to you. Don't come here illegally. Don't be the next cartoon!" Another added, "This is how a right-wing government acts with illegal immigrants."
