World Alzheimer's Day 2023: Alzheimer's disease, also known as the ‘silent thief of memories’, is a disease linked with the functioning of the human brain. With the aim to spread awareness about it, the world is celebrating World Alzheimer's Day today, September 21. The day also aims to curb the stigma around the disease. Alzheimer's is also one of the most common causes of Dementia. The disease affects the brain cells, where the cells shrink and die, leaving the patient with a declined independence of their own will. A person suffering from Alzheimer's experiences memory loss, which eventually negatively affects the thinking ability of the individual. A progressing Alzheimer's also leads to the patient struggling in completing their basic and day-to-day tasks.
World Alzheimer's Day was chosen to be celebrated on September 21 as a tribute to Dr Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer, a psychiatrist and neurologist hailing from Germany, was born on this day in 1864. Alzheimer's disease became popular in the medical field after Dr Alois Alzheimer discovered the first published case of ‘presenile dementia’.
Taking to social media, people shared posts and reactions on World Alzheimer's Day and tried to spread awareness about the disease. Many Netizens also stressed the importance of collective efforts by people to fight against brain disease.
“World Alzheimer’s Day - September 21, 2023 Never too late, Never too early,” a user said.
