Believe it or not, but there is an insect that might be much more valuable than one’s luxury car, monthly salary, or even one’s net worth; Stag Beetle- a shiny black insect with antlers-like antennae has created a buzz in the Indian market, with its hefty cost that is worth Rs 75 lakh. Yes, you read that correctly. As per a recent study that was published by Scientific Data, Stag Beetles are recognised by their ‘enlarged mandibles’, and are valued for their ‘important saproxylic assemblages in forest ecosystems’, making them one of the world’s most expensive insects.

Apart from their vital importance in the ecosystem itself, these insects are also believed to carry immense luck, as keeping them overnight, as per many, can bring ‘wealth’. Known for being one of the rarest species in the world, they are usually found in ‘tropical and warm environments’, as per reports. In fact, surviving in the cold temperature is a huge task for these insects.

They cause no harm to their surroundings, mainly to the greenery they live in. They mostly survive on ‘ sweet liquids’, deriving it reportedly from ‘tree sap’ or ‘rotting fruits’. Meanwhile, their larvae use dead wood to thrive on. They usually weigh 2-6 grams and can live for 3 to 7 years.The male stag beetles can grow as long as 35-75 mm, whereas the female stag beetles can reach a length of 30-50 mm.

Along with being a key species to their surroundings and carrying supposed ‘luck’, these insects are also popular for their medical purposes among researchers, making them further valuable.
