A group of 19 United States Congress members, led by Congresswoman Deborah Ross and Congressman Ro Khanna, has written to President Donald Trump urging him to take immediate steps to mend the increasingly strained relationship between the US and India. The lawmakers cited recent tariff hikes on Indian goods as a major point of concern, highlighting the negative impact on both nations.

The letter criticised the administration’s decision in late August 2025 to raise tariffs on Indian goods to as high as 50 percent. This combined an initial 25 percent “reciprocal” tariff with an additional 25 percent duty in response to India’s energy imports from Russia. According to the lawmakers, these measures “have hurt Indian manufacturers while simultaneously raising prices for American consumers and damaging the intricate supply chains that American companies depend on to bring products to market.”

Economic Ties At Stake

Highlighting the economic interests, the lawmakers said that the US-India trading relationship sustains "hundreds of thousands of jobs in both nations." Indian suppliers are dependent on the US for significant inputs in industries like semiconductors, healthcare, and energy. Indian investment in the US has also poured billions of dollars into local economies, generating jobs and growth opportunities across the country.

Impact On Innovation And Cooperation

Such indiscriminate tariff increases puts these relationships at risk, increasing expenses for American families, weakening the competitiveness of American businesses globally, and eroding revolutionary innovation and collaboration," the letter cautioned.

The legislators also urged caution that the administration's move may drive India toward greater cooperation with nations opposed to the US, which includes China and Russia. They emphasied that India is a vital component in keeping the Indo-Pacific stable through The Quad alliance with the US, Australia, and Japan. India's value is also in defense cooperation, combined military exercises, and protecting critical maritime lanes.

The lawmakers also asked the Trump administration to roll back the tariff increases and actively engage with India to enhance diplomatic and economic ties. "Our relationship with India is truly crucial. It matters for the security, prosperity, and innovation of both countries," the letter said.
