After the Israeli forces' attack on UNIFIL headquarters in southern Lebanon, which resulted in injuries to two Indonesian peacekeepers, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has urged the international community to halt arms sales to Israel. He condemned the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for their actions against UNIFIL positions in the region.

Earlier in the day, the IDF announced that it was looking into reports of injuries sustained by two peacekeepers after a UN source indicated that Israeli forces had fired upon an observation post. This report followed an incident the previous day in which two peacekeepers were injured.

Spain has stationed 650 peacekeepers in Lebanon, and a Spanish general is at the helm of the UN mission. Sanchez condemned the attacks by the Israeli armed forces on the United Nations mission in Lebanon during a meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

“I think it is urgent given what is happening in the Middle East that the international community stops exporting weapons to the Israeli government,” he said.

Earlier last week, French President Emmanuel Macron urged for an end to arms deliveries to Israel, which has been conducting airstrikes in Gaza for a year and recently initiated a military operation against Lebanon.

“I believe that our main focus should be on returning to a political solution and ceasing the delivery of weapons for the conflict in Gaza,” Macron stated in an interview with broadcaster France Inter.

Macron's comments drew an angry response from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who labelled them a "disgrace".

“In the fight against the forces of barbarism led by Iran, all civilised nations should stand resolutely with Israel,” Netanyahu stated in a release from his office. “Yet, President Macron and other Western leaders are now advocating for arms embargoes against Israel. Shame on them.”

In September, the United Kingdom announced the suspension of certain arms exports to Israel, citing a "clear risk" that they might be used in serious violations of international humanitarian law.
