A US Navy surveillance drone, the MQ-4C Triton, suddenly disappeared after declaring an in-flight emergency alert on Friday. America's most expensive aircraft had roughly completed a three-hour surveillance of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. It was about to return to its base at Italy's Naval Air Sigonella. However, an online flight tracking website, Flightradar24, revealed that the drone appeared to shift towards Tehran while sending code 7700 (a general emergency code) as it plunged in the air. The empty aircraft was tracked rapidly losing altitude before it vanished.

The development comes two days after the US and Iran agreed to a ceasefire, with Iran agreeing to reopen Hormuz for shipping traffic.

The MQ-4C Triton is worth over U 200 million, positioned for the US Central Command area over the Gulf region. The Triton offers long-hour strategic surveillance over chokepoints, in contrast to conventional aircraft. It is designed for long-term, extensive maritime surveillance, often acting as the P-8A Poseidon patrol planes' high-altitude eyes. With a range of 7,400 nautical miles, Triton is the only autonomous high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) maritime aircraft that can operate at heights above 50,000 feet for more than 24 hours.

According to sources, the US Navy has 20 MQ-4C Triton drones as of 2025 and planned to purchase seven more.
