French prosecutors are investigating the reported gang rape of an Australian woman visiting Paris, where the Olympics 2024 are set to commence. The Paris public prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday that a 25-year-old Australian woman reported being raped, and the incident is being investigated as gang rape.
The French media reported that five men were involved in the assault, which allegedly took place overnight on Friday, July 19.
Earlier today, a video of the 25-year-old woman went viral in which she was reportedly found disoriented and unable to speak French outside a kebab shop around 5 a.m. on Saturday, July 20. The shop, located on Boulevard de Clichy in Paris’ 18th arrondissement, near the Moulin Rouge, was where she was discovered.
The woman seemed bewildered, with her dress reportedly worn "backward" and partially torn. She claimed that she had been raped by five individuals. The kebab shop’s owner told 7News that the woman’s dress was damaged and she was crying uncontrollably. Some reports also mentioned that her phone was stolen, and she was seen holding her underwear in her hand.
The woman was scheduled to return to Australia but will now remain in Paris to assist the police with the investigation.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that an investigation is underway.
"The investigation into the alleged gang rape, which is thought to have occurred from the night of July 19 to 20, has been assigned to the second judicial police district," the prosecutor’s office stated.
Security authorities in Paris have been on high alert as the city prepares for the Olympic Games, set to begin on Friday with an open-air ceremony on the River Seine.
Meanwhile, Australian Olympic team chief Anna Meares stated that the team is aware of the allegations made by an Australian woman who claimed she was raped in Paris. She urged the nation's athletes to exercise extra caution during the Paris Games due to increased security concerns.
"There isn't a lot of detail or information available at this time, but we are informing our athletes that the security presence is extremely high," she said.
