Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Opposition leader Benny Gantz have agreed to form an emergency government amid the unprecedented war situation in the country, news agency Reuters reported. A joint statement in this regard was issued by Gantz's National Unity party.

The two factions agreed to form a war cabinet comprising PM Netanyahu, Benny Gantz and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, the statement said. This will discuss the key strategy needed to be adopted in the war against Hamas.
The unity government will discuss only war-related issues and unrelated policies or laws will not be promoted, the statement said.
The country has been witnessing political turmoil for the last few months as the Opposition alleged Netanyahu was trying to weaken the judiciary after the latter pushed several reforms. The new law, which witnessed Opposition shouting ‘shame’ when it passed, cancels a clause which allows the Israeli Supreme Court to change key government decisions, including appointments, if it finds them unreasonable and against public interest. The decision removed a crucial check of courts on political power.
The move is now being considered as a political compulsion of Netanyahu to bolster the country in times of crisis.
The Crisis:
As many as 3,600 have died so far as tension keeps mounting between Israel an Hamas. Israel has been carrying airstrikes across Gaza as retaliatory bombing against Hamas’ misadventure on Saturday. Equating the Palestinian militant movement Hamas with ISIS, Netanyahu said his country didn’t begin the war but they will finish it, adding that the aftermath would change entire Middle East.
Tel Aviv declared a “state of war” on Saturday after Hamas launched a surprise military operation against it. Hamas launched as many as 5,000 rockets, declaring the operation as ‘the greatest battle to end the last occupation on earth’. In a broadcast on Hamas media, senior military commander Mohammad Deif announced the start of the operation, urging Palestinians worldwide to join the fight.
