Elon Musk on Sunday criticised the Joe Biden administration for the euthanasia of Peanut, the internet-famous squirrel. The Tesla boss referred to the Biden administration as a "mindless and heartless killing machine". Peanut, who had over 5,40,000 Instagram followers, was seized by New York state authorities and euthanised due to concerns over rabies exposure.

Authorities seized peanut after the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) received several anonymous complaints. The officials also seized Fred, a racoon, during the operation for health concerns. "A person involved with the investigation was bitten by the squirrel. To test for rabies, both animals were euthanized," the agency said.

Musk joined thousands others in the online mourning, where he also stated that the administration under Donald Trump would never do such a thing. “President Donald Trump will save the squirrels,” Musk wrote on X, which he owns, alongside a squirrel and crying face emoji. His post included an image of Peanut perched on owner Mark Longo's back. Musk, in a follow-up tweet, posted an AI-generated image of Peanut as Star Wars character Obi-Wan Kenobi, holding a lightsaber. “If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine,” he posted.

Curious Case Of Peanut

Peanut was rescued by Mark Longo, his owner, seven years ago after his mother was hit by a car in New York City. Longo runs an animal sanctuary. Longo initially attempted to release him into the wild, but the squirrel came back to him and stayed. His waffle-eating, costume-wearing escapades made him famous among his thousands of followers. Longo blamed authority and a few individuals in his emotional post on Instagram. He expressed his grief by saying that there was a place in hell for people who called the authorities. “To the group of people who called (the DEC), there's a special place in hell for you,” he wrote.
