At the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong and heartfelt statement on global security. Referring to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, Modi called it a “cowardly and inhuman” act that directly targeted the soul, identity, and dignity of India. “This attack was not just on India but on the entire humanity,” he said.
PM Modi emphasised that condemning terrorism should be a principle, not a matter of convenience. He criticised the selective global response to terrorism and stressed that victims and supporters of terrorism must not be weighed on the same scale. “There should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions on terrorists,” he asserted.
At the Session on ‘Peace and Security and Reform of Global Governance’ during the BRICS Summit, reiterated India’s commitment to the values of peace and brotherhood. Afterall, world peace and security are the foundations of our shared interests and future.

He warned against turning a blind eye or offering silent support to terror groups for political gain, calling such behaviour a betrayal of humanity. “If we cannot align our words and actions on terrorism, then we must ask ourselves whether we are truly serious about this fight,” Modi stated.

India Reaffirms Its Commitment To Peace
Addressing the broader context of global conflict, Modi said that from West Asia to Europe, disputes and tensions were rising. He expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and reiterated India’s belief in peace, dialogue, and cooperation.
“India, the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Buddha, has no place for war and violence. We support every effort that promotes solidarity and trust among nations,” he said.
Highlighting the need for a more inclusive world order, Modi argued that the global institutions formed in the 20th century are ill-equipped to address 21st-century challenges like terrorism, pandemics, and economic crises. He advocated for comprehensive reforms in institutions like the UN Security Council, WTO, and Multilateral Development Banks to give the Global South its rightful representation.

The summit, hosted by Brazil from July 7 to 9, saw participation from original BRICS members, Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, as well as new entrants: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, and Indonesia. Leaders gathered for a symbolic family photo at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio, reflecting the growing reach and evolving vision of the BRICS alliance.
