The 42-year-old climber was swarming up the Dachstein Mountains, part of the Northern Limestone Alps when he fell off the end of the ladder. It connects the lower portion of the Donnerkogel Mountain to its Grosser Donnerkogel part. Two helicopters reached the location and recovered his body from a gully beneath the ladder.  The third-party negligence has been ruled out in the incident as the latter was scaling the ladder alone.

An athlete was earlier in 2020 pictured balancing on the ladder with no harness. The climb has been rated as difficult and is not advocated for beginners.
