The vice-chancellor of the University of Buckingham, Prof. James Tooley, has been temporarily suspended amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a young woman, believed to be in her twenties, whose student fees he reportedly helped fund. The 65-year-old academic, who holds a prestigious position at one of Britain’s leading private universities and earns £229,000 annually, has vehemently denied the claims.

The allegations came to light after Prof. Tooley’s wife, 42-year-old Cynthia, reportedly handed over copies of diaries written by the young woman, which she claims contain details of the relationship. The scandal has sparked widespread attention, with the university launching an investigation into the matter, while the vice-chancellor faces increasing scrutiny over both his professional and personal conduct.

James Tooley is facing allegations of a sexual relationship with a woman who was first introduced to him when she was 18. Their relationship reportedly began when she was 21, though she later updated the account to suggest she was 25 at the time.

The relationship allegedly developed after Tooley became involved in a project in Hyderabad aimed at providing low-cost education. He had known the woman’s father and contributed to her university tuition before the relationship began. Tooley, who became vice-chancellor in 2020, is also known for controversial views, such as criticising diversity targets at Cambridge and launching a course on the ‘woke’ movement.
