The fallout from the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has reached America’s aviation industry, with three major airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and United Airlines, suspending employees for inflammatory social media posts linked to the incident. The suspensions highlight how companies are enforcing stricter policies on online conduct amid heightened political tensions in the United States.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian confirmed the action in an internal memo shared with CNN, stating that some employees had made posts that “went well beyond healthy, respectful debate.” He added that such behaviour “stands in stark contrast to our values and our social media policy,” and confirmed that employees involved have been suspended pending investigation.

American Airlines Acts Swiftly

American Airlines also took swift disciplinary measures, noting that staff who shared content “promoting such violence” were “immediately removed from service.” The airline underscored its zero-tolerance approach to posts that appear to justify or encourage politically motivated violence.

United Airlines, meanwhile, sent a company-wide reminder to staff, including pilots, about its social media policies. The airline later confirmed that employees had been suspended in recent days after reviewing their posts. In a statement, United said, “We’ve been clear with our customers and employees that there’s zero tolerance for politically motivated violence or any attempt to justify it.”

The airline actions come as the shooting of Kirk, a polarising conservative figure, has triggered fierce debate online, with posts ranging from condolences to inflammatory celebrations. The US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy weighed in over the weekend, condemning the behaviour of airline staff who posted celebratory or violent remarks. Writing on X, he called the conduct “disgusting” and suggested the employees “should be fired.”
