China on Sunday said it is "closely following" the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and called for an "impartial investigation" to be initiated promptly. The statement was issued after a phone conversation between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar.
During their conversation, Dar and Wang reaffirmed their shared commitment to peace and stability in the region. They discussed the evolving situation and emphasised opposition to "unilateral actions and hegemonic policies" that could further destabilise South Asia. Dar reiterated Pakistan’s rejection of what he termed India’s "unilateral and illegal actions" and dismissed what he called "baseless propaganda" targeting Pakistan. Dar also thanked China for its consistent support and reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to further strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
China Urges Restraint And Dialogue
Wang Yi stressed that China supports an impartial investigation into the Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 Indian tourists dead. He further urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint, move toward dialogue, and work toward de-escalating tensions. Wang, a senior member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasised that maintaining peace is essential for the broader stability of the region.

The Pakistani leader briefed Wang on the latest developments and Pakistan’s perspective on the situation, underscoring Islamabad’s concerns over what it perceives as Indian aggression.
India’s Response: Tighter Measures Against Pakistan
In the aftermath of the attack, India has undertaken a series of strong retaliatory measures against Pakistan. These include suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, banning all Pakistani visas, and accelerating the return of Pakistani nationals residing in India on short-term permits. An Indian official told news agency ANI that at least 537 Pakistani nationals had left India via the Attari border over the past three days.
Meanwhile, India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken over the investigation into the Pahalgam terror attack. Officials have sealed off the attack site, a popular tourist destination, to preserve evidence and prevent contamination. The NIA’s probe is expected to focus on uncovering any links between the perpetrators and cross-border militant networks.
The Pahalgam attack has once again brought India-Pakistan relations to a precarious point. While China’s call for an impartial investigation and dialogue offers a potential path forward, the situation remains tense.
