China Mine Blast News: In a tragic incident, at least 90 people got killed and several others went missing after an explosion at a coal mine in China. The explosion occurred at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan County in the late hours of Friday, with over 200 workers on duty, reported AFP. The authorities stated that the rescue operation is underway, adding that a detailed probe has been launched into the matter.
'Responsible Must Be Held Accountable'
While reacting to the tragic incident, China's President Xi Jinping has directed the rescue teams to make every effort to track the missing workers. The Chinese president also called for strict accountability into the matter, saying those responsible must be held accountable.
"All regions and departments must learn from the lessons of the accident, remain vigilant regarding workplace safety, thoroughly investigate, rectify all types of risks and hidden dangers, and resolutely prevent and curb the occurrence of major and serious accidents," Xi said.
Chinese premier Li Qiang, while echoing the directions of Xi, ordered the authorities to spare no efforts to rescue the missing workers. He further asked for a detailed investigation to detect the exact reasons behind the heavy explosion.
Deadliest Incident In A Decade
The coal mine fatalities usually happen due to gas explosions or flooding; however, China has been able to reduce these incidents in the past two decades. However, the Liushenyu incident is being considered the deadliest in the past decade in which at least 82 people have already lost their lives. The authorities of the company responsible for the mining has already been detained, reported Xinhua.
Earlier on Friday, Xinhua reported that only eight people had died in the explosion. The daily has not provided any reason behind this sudden rise in the death toll. Xi Jinping has also asked the authorities to make necessary arrangements as the country is entering its rainy season.
