Chinese state media has spotlighted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s remarks describing India and China as Russia’s closest friends, emphasising Moscow’s balanced diplomacy amid evolving regional dynamics. Putin noted that Moscow places great value on its relations with both countries while respecting their bilateral affairs.

Quoting Russian news agency TASS, the Global Times reported that Putin expressed confidence in Indian and Chinese leaders’ ability to resolve intergovernmental issues, even the most sensitive ones. “Their wisdom is the key factor enabling agreements,” Putin said, adding that Russia does not feel entitled to intervene in bilateral matters between New Delhi and Beijing.

Balancing China And India Relations

While China has yet to officially comment on Putin’s visit, analysts say the report highlights Beijing’s cautious attention to the India-Russia relationship. Despite a strong strategic partnership with China, Moscow has ensured its ties with India remain intact, even during periods of tension, such as the 2020 Ladakh confrontation.

The Indian-Russian partnership, experts note, has proven resilient to external pressures and remains strategically significant. Chinese media praised the visit as sending a “clear message to the world” that both India and Russia are not isolated.

Quoting Li Haidong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, the Global Times noted that India-Russia coordination demonstrates the countries’ determination to strengthen their independent and autonomous capabilities. “Through Putin’s visit, India and Russia have jointly sent a clear message to the outside world: neither country is isolated,” Li said.

The Chinese media coverage also interprets Putin’s visit as a signal amid global tensions, including US efforts to broker a Ukraine peace deal and push India to reduce trade with Moscow. By framing India-Russia ties as resilient and mutually supportive, the visit reinforces the message that both countries are committed to independent foreign policies, strategic cooperation, and economic collaboration despite Western pressures.
