A woman in northeastern China is facing massive public outrage after it was discovered that she adopted stray dogs, then killed and cooked them. Animal shelters in Liaoning province raised the alarm after getting multiple reports from concerned dog lovers. Whistleblowers claimed that a local shop owner, who runs a grain and oil business, was taking in rescued dogs and turning them into soup.
According to Jimu News, the woman, who goes by the alias Zhixuan, contacted animal shelters through messaging apps asking to adopt stray dogs. She promised to care for the dogs and even agreed to follow-up visits. But once she took them home, she reportedly killed and cooked them. Online screenshots showed videos and photos of her cooking dog meat, including one post that read, "Dog meat is almost ready. Perfect for a rainy day with a drink." Another showed her child eating the meat with the caption: “Only the best for the kid.”

Zhixuan refused to apologise
Shelter workers found out what was happening after seeing these posts online. They reported her to the police and warned other shelters and pet shops about her. Tan, a leader at one of the rescue groups, said Zhixuan refused to apologise when he messaged her. He stressed the need for shelters to carefully check people before allowing them to adopt animals. The incident went viral on Chinese social media, with related topics gaining over 10 million views. One person commented: “Those poor dogs thought they found a home, but were sent straight to hell.” Another said: “When will China create real laws to punish cruelty like this?”
On May 13, police confirmed that the woman had killed and eaten dog meat. Authorities seized the meat, and the case is under investigation. Her social media account has since been made private, and all her posts are hidden.
Dog meat is not illegal in China
In most parts of China, eating dog meat is not illegal, though it is controversial. Some still believe it has health benefits, like boosting strength or helping with joint pain, but there is no scientific proof. Eating dog meat also poses health risks. In 2020, the city of Shenzhen became one of the first in China to ban the eating of dogs and cats. People who break this law can be fined up to 10 times the value of the meat.
