The Bangladesh High Court is set to hear a petition seeking a ban on ISKCON amid escalating attacks on the Hindu community in the strife-hit nation. This comes after monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu was arrested and charged with sedition. The Hindu community has been holding fervent protests demanding his release.
The petition also urges the declaration of a state of emergency in Chittagong and Rangpur to avert further unrest, as protests continue to affect both cities. As per The Daily Star, the HC sought an explanation from the government on steps taken by them amid the ISKCON row. The high court has asked the government to take immediate measures to address the situation, which has raised concerns over the safety of religious minorities in the country.
Prabhu has been vocal about the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh and has organised several protests calling for the protection of the religious minority community. He was arrested on November 25 at Dhaka Airport and subsequently jailed on sedition charges. Protests erupted outside the Chittagong court, during which a lawyer was reportedly killed by the mob.
Meanwhile, India has expressed concerns over the attack on minorities in Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs has asked the Bangladesh government to ensure the safety of Hindus in the country. “We urge Bangladesh authorities to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their right of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression," MEA said in an official statement.
Hindus have been on target of radical groups in Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina fled the country after being unceremoniously removed from the PM post. She has since been residing in India.
