Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a telephonic conversation with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as Cyclone Ditwah’s devastation continues to unfold across the island nation. With catastrophic floods and landslides sweeping across several districts, Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirmed the death toll has climbed to at least 366, while nearly 400 people remain missing. Homes, roads, and essential infrastructure have suffered massive damage, leaving thousands in need of urgent assistance. 

During their conversation, PM Modi expressed deep condolences on behalf of India and reaffirmed New Delhi’s unwavering solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka. He assured President Dissanayake that India would continue to provide all necessary support through Operation Sagar Bandhu, under which emergency assistance is being deployed to affected regions.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to standing by Sri Lanka throughout the crisis. Guided by its maritime doctrine, Vision MAHASAGAR, India intends to remain a reliable partner for both immediate relief and long-term recovery.

Sri Lanka Appreciates India’s Swift Response

President Dissanayake expressed heartfelt gratitude to PM Modi for India’s rapid and effective response. He thanked India for the quick deployment of rescue teams, the supply of relief materials, and the proactive coordination that helped stabilise several severely affected zones. The Sri Lankan President also conveyed the appreciation of citizens who have praised India’s timely assistance amid the unfolding tragedy.

Devastation Across Sri Lanka

Cyclone Ditwah has wreaked widespread havoc since November 16, triggering extreme flooding and landslides. As of Sunday, officials confirmed 336 deaths, a number expected to rise as rescue teams reach remote locations. Nearly 370 individuals remain missing, and several regions are still inaccessible due to collapsed roads and debris.

Thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed, while power lines, transport routes, and communication systems have suffered extensive disruption.

Rescue Efforts And Continued Operations

India has been actively assisting with evacuation missions. On Monday, the Indian Air Force IFC 1875 helicopter successfully rescued 57 stranded people, the Indian High Commission stated. Joint rescue teams from both countries continue to work around the clock as weather conditions gradually improve. 

PM Modi assured that India will keep supporting Sri Lanka beyond the rescue phase, helping restore public services, rebuild infrastructure, and support families attempting to reclaim their livelihoods. Both leaders agreed to stay in close contact to ensure coordinated relief and rehabilitation.
