The legendary “Doomsday Fish” is making waves again. In recent weeks, multiple sightings of the rare deep-sea creature known as the oarfish have been reported across several countries, sparking renewed fears of looming natural disasters. Traditionally seen as a harbinger of earthquakes and tsunamis in Japanese folklore, the oarfish has become a subject of global fascination and superstition.

The latest spate of sightings began in early June 2025, when not one but two oarfish were spotted in New Zealand, one near Dunedin and another, headless, near Christchurch. These back-to-back appearances set off alarm bells among marine scientists and the public alike, especially considering New Zealand's history of seismic activity. Just days later, another oarfish washed ashore on the rugged west coast of Tasmania, discovered by local resident Sybil Robertson. Her social media post showing the strange creature quickly went viral, with online users speculating on its possible link to geological unrest.

30-Foot Oarfish Caught Off India’s Tamil Nadu Coast

In India, an oarfish was caught off the coast of Tamil Nadu earlier this month. Measuring a staggering 30 feet, the ribbon-like creature left locals in awe, and unease. Dubbed the “Regalecus Glesne,” this deep-sea dweller usually resides between 200 and 1,000 meters below the surface. Its rare appearance on the surface is often viewed as a sign of impending natural calamities, a belief rooted in centuries-old myth.

These incidents come less than a year after a notable oarfish sighting off San Diego in August 2024. Just two days after the 12-foot-long fish appeared near the California coast, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Los Angeles. While scientists caution against drawing direct links between oarfish sightings and seismic events, the timing has fueled persistent theories about the creature’s sensitivity to tectonic changes.

‘New Baba Vanga’ Predicts Mega Disaster

Adding to the drama, a new so-called “Baba Vanga”, a self-proclaimed seer gaining popularity online, has warned of a “mega disaster” in the near future. The convergence of prophetic warnings and unusual marine phenomena has captured global attention and stoked public fear.

Despite the sensationalism, experts urge calm. Marine biologists explain that oarfish sometimes surface due to illness or ocean disturbances, not necessarily to predict earthquakes. However, with four sightings in just 20 days across New Zealand, India, and Australia, public anxiety is rising.
