US President Donald Trump has reignited debate over global nuclear activity, claiming in a fresh interview that multiple nations, including Pakistan, are actively conducting nuclear weapons tests while the United States remains the only major power refraining from doing so. Speaking to CBS News’ 60 Minutes on Sunday, Trump insisted that “Russia’s testing and China’s testing,” adding that North Korea and Pakistan are also engaged in nuclear experimentation.

According to Trump, America’s transparency sets it apart. “We’re an open society… we have to talk about it because otherwise you people are going to report,” he told the interviewer, asserting that other governments are able to hide such activities due to state-controlled media environments.

Orders For ‘Immediate’ US Testing

The remarks follow Trump’s October 30 directive instructing the Department of War to begin US nuclear testing “immediately.” In a Truth Social post, he argued that the United States holds the largest nuclear arsenal in the world and should maintain parity with rival testing programs. While stressing that he “hates” nuclear testing because of its destructive power, he claimed the move is necessary “because they test and others test.”

Trump defended his plan again on CBS, arguing that America should not be the only nuclear state that refrains from weapons trials. “I don’t want to be the only country that doesn’t test,” he said, pointing to regular testing by North Korea and recent announcements from Moscow. The comments arrive on the heels of Russia’s test of its so-called “unlimited range” Burevestnik missile.

Denuclearisation Talk

Trump said he has spoken about denuclearisation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting that both possess vast arsenals. “We have enough nuclear weapons to blow up the world 150 times,” he claimed, warning that China could catch up to Russia within five years.

Arms-control experts have long warned that renewed US testing could dismantle decades of global non-proliferation progress.

India-Pakistan Nuclear Claims Resurface

In the same interview, Trump repeated his controversial claim that he personally prevented a nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan during heightened tensions in May 2025.

“They were going to war,” Trump said. “They were gonna have a nuclear war with Pakistan.” He quoted Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as allegedly thanking him for intervention. India has repeatedly rejected these claims as “unfounded political fantasies.”
