The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has begun demonstrating his tough stance even before assuming office. He has warned Hamas that if the hostages in the Gaza Strip are not released before he assumes the presidency, there will be serious consequences. This warning from Trump follows extensive diplomatic efforts by the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden.

On October 7 last year, Hamas militants took as many as 250 civilians hostage after launching a violent attack across Israeli cities. Nearly half of the 101 foreign and Israeli hostages are still believed to be alive and remain captive in Gaza.

“[If] the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, the date that I proudly assume office as President of the United States, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge who perpetrated these atrocities against Humanity. Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied history of the United States of America,” Trump said, as per news agency Reuters.

Notably, Hamas launched the deadliest attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. According to official Israeli figures, the attack resulted in 1,208 deaths, most of whom were civilians. Hamas is demanding that the Israeli military withdraw from Gaza and is asking for the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the hostages.

In response to Hamas' demand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the war would continue until Hamas is completely eradicated.

The situation in the Gaza Strip has reached a devastating level. Basic infrastructure has been destroyed, and the majority of the population has been displaced. Due to Israeli military action, millions of people have been forced to leave their homes. The war has also had a severe impact on Gaza's healthcare system and living conditions.
