After the removal of Kevin McCarthy from the position of House Speaker, former President of the United States Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to temporarily assume the role to unify the Republican Party. Trump conveyed this in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, stating that his extensive connections within Congress make him a suitable choice for a 'temporary' position.

"I have been asked to speak as a unifier because I have so many friends in Congress. If they don't get the vote, they have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody longer term because I am running for president.," Trump disclosed to Fox News Digital.

He further added, "They have asked me if I would take it for a short period for the party until they conclude -- I'm not doing it because I want to -- I will do it if necessary, should they not be able to make their decision." He clarified that while he is not seeking the role, he is willing to step in if the party struggles to reach a decision.

The recent removal of Kevin McCarthy marked a historic event, as he became the first Speaker to be ousted through a vote. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina has assumed temporary leadership following McCarthy's 269-day tenure, the second-shortest in U.S. history.

The move to replace McCarthy was instigated by Rep. Matt Gaetz and fueled by dissatisfaction among hardline Republicans after McCarthy secured Democratic support to avert a government shutdown.

With contenders like Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan announcing their candidatures, the Republicans are yet to reach a consensus on the new Speaker. Trump, highlighting his readiness to facilitate party unity, expressed his willingness to take on the speakership for a brief period, be it 30, 60, or 90 days, if an agreement proves elusive. The evolving political landscape will determine whether Trump's temporary leadership becomes a reality in the coming weeks.
