United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the call, Putin reportedly shared ideas on how to resolve the conflict related to Iran’s nuclear programme. This is the first publicly reported call between the two leaders since March 9 and comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s recent visit to Moscow. 

Trump, Putin Hold 90-Minute Call

According to a Reuters report, citing Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the two leaders spoke for over 90 minutes, covering a range of issues with focus on the Middle East. The aide said Putin also suggested a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine around next month’s World War Two anniversary. Notably, a similar short truce was announced last year, but it was not accepted by Kyiv. 

What Did The Leaders Discuss?

Ushakov did not share details of Putin’s proposal on Iran but said Russia has previously offered to move enriched uranium out of Iran. The call was described as “friendly and businesslike.” Trump also reportedly said a deal to end the Ukraine war could be close. "The presidents paid particular attention to the situation regarding Iran and in the Persian Gulf," Ushakov said. 

Trump Rejects Iran's Proposal

Earlier in the day, in an interview with Axios, Trump had rejected the Iranian proposal to first open the Strait of Hormuz and lift the blockade. He stated that he would continue to keep the naval blockade until Iran agrees to deal with Washington by addressing America's concerns about the nuclear program.

"The blockade is somewhat more effective than the bombing. They are choking like a stuffed pig. And it is going to be worse for them. They can't have a nuclear weapon," Trump said. Later, he also shared an Al-generated meme of himself holding a gun with a warning to Iran and the tagline, "NO MORE MR. NICE GUY." 

Earlier on Tuesday, Araghchi met the Russian President in St. Petersburg. In a statement posted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia on Telegram, Putin praised the Iranian people for what he described as their “courage” and determination to maintain independence and sovereignty.

He said, “We see how courageously and heroically the people of Iran are fighting for their independence and sovereignty. Of course, we very much hope that, relying on this courage and striving for independence, the Iranian people, under the leadership of their new Leader, will overcome this difficult period of trials and see peace prevail.”
