Amid uncertainty surrounding the future of the H-1B visa program, US President Donald Trump stated that he values "very competent people" coming into the country at all levels and does not intend to eliminate the H-1B visa program. Trump made this comment during a discussion with CEOs of major companies, including Oracle CTO Larry Ellison, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
“I like both sides of the argument, but I also like very competent people coming into our country, even if that involves them training and helping other people who may not have the qualifications they do. But I don’t want to stop — and I’m not just talking about engineers, I’m talking about people at all levels," he said.
“We want competent people coming into our country. And H-1B, I know the programme very well. I use the programme. Maître d’, wine experts, even waiters, high-quality waiters — you’ve got to get the best people. People like Larry, he needs engineers, Masa also needs… they need engineers like nobody’s ever needed them," he added.
The H-1B visa has been a point of contention, even among Trump's own allies. While Elon Musk believes the program helps bring qualified professionals to the US, others argue that the influx of foreign workers takes jobs away from American citizens.
US Birthright Citizenship Scarapped
Donald Trump revoked the provision granting automatic citizenship to children born in the US through a key executive order titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship.” Trump declared that, unless at least one parent of a newborn in the US is an American citizen or a green card holder, the child will not be granted American citizenship.
However, this decision is likely to be challenged in court, as birthright citizenship is enshrined in the US Constitution.
