An Oxford professor has warned that Earth could be at risk of an invasion by aliens resembling Jabba the Hutt, the slug-like villain from Star Wars. Professor Tim Coulson, an esteemed scientist, believes that if intelligent extraterrestrial life exists, it may come in the form of bloated, slow-moving blobs with highly advanced technology, potentially posing a threat to humanity.
Writing in The European magazine, Coulson argued that it is “perfectly rational” to assume that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe. He speculated that these creatures, much like humans, would seek to expand their reach and exploit resources, possibly targeting Earth as their next home.
"Perhaps hi-tech alien spacecraft are already traversing vast tracts of space towards Earth, on a mission to make it a new home for the aliens that built the kit," Coulson wrote. He cautioned that if alien technology were to appear in our solar system, it should be treated with extreme caution.
Despite his alarming theory, Coulson noted that these aliens would likely be highly reliant on technology. Over time, this dependence would have made them “slow, sluggish, and largely sedentary”, reducing their physical capabilities.
What Would Advanced Aliens Look Like?
Professor Coulson theorised that in order to develop advanced technology, intelligent extraterrestrials would need jointed arms, multi-digited hands, and complex brains capable of understanding the world around them. However, if their society followed a technological trajectory similar to humanity’s, their reliance on machines would mean they would likely lack physical agility.
“If I had to hazard a guess about what the most common intelligent aliens looked like, I’d put my money on them not being enormously athletic,” he explained.
According to Coulson, the evolution of alien civilizations may mirror human advancements, with intelligent beings outsourcing physical labor to machines, leading to a decrease in physical strength and activity over time.
Should Humanity Be Worried?
While Coulson's theory may sound like something out of science fiction, he emphasised that the possibility of extraterrestrial civilisations colonizing Earth cannot be ignored. Given that humans have historically expanded and conquered new territories for resources, he suggested that aliens, if they exist, may behave in a similar way.
