As former US president Donald Trump's claims about Haitian immigrants eating cats and dogs heat up, Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared a video featuring a woman of alleged Haitian descent explaining why Haitians eat cats. Musk's post coincides with several media outlets fact-checking Trump's statements about Haitians.
The woman, who goes by the name Rebekah Faidia on TikTok, discussed voodoo practices in Haiti and mentioned that her father immigrated from Haiti to the US in the late 1960s.
In the video, Faidia explains that Haitians eat cats for two main reasons: survival and religious animal sacrifices.
Faidia said, "This is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. You can't just go to a food bank like you can here (in the US)... People in the US have a really hard time imagining that type of thing, but it is true. Second, they do animal sacrifices for their religion, voodoo. They make these animal sacrifices to these gods for different reasons."
She also defended Trump, arguing that acknowledging the issue is not racist and criticised people for making jokes about his claims rather than investigating their validity.

Earlier on Tuesday, during the presidential debate, Trump claimed that "Haitian immigrants" in Ohio were "eating dogs and pets." The debate moderator responded by pointing out that there was no evidence to support this claim.
"In Springfield, they are eating the dogs -- the people that came in -- they are eating the cats," Trump said during the debate's segment on immigration policy. "They are eating the pets of the people that live there, and this is what's happening in our country, and it's a shame," he said.
Referring to Vice PresidentKamala Harris as the Biden administration's border czar Trump, who has vowed to execute the largest domestic deportation operation in US history, claimed that migrant-related crimes have also risen over the past four years.
