Social media platform X announced on Saturday that it would cease operations in Brazil "effective immediately" in response to what it described as "censorship orders" from Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes.

X alleges that the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil, Moraes, secretly threatened one of its legal representatives in Brazil with arrest if the platform did not comply with orders to remove certain content.

X owner Elon Musk also posted on his account, stating that Morae is “an utter disgrace to justice”.

“Due to demands by “Justice” @Alexandre in Brazil that would require us to break (in secret) Brazilian, Argentinian, American, and international law, 𝕏 has no choice but to close our local operations in Brazil,” said Musk.

Brazil's Supreme Court, where Moraes serves, has not yet commented on the matter. Despite the announcement, X stated that its service remains accessible to users in Brazil.

X Global Government Affairs Team Gives Explanation

Explaining why the organisation had to take this decision, X's Global Government Affairs team said in a statement, “Last night, Alexandre de Moraes threatened our legal representative in Brazil with arrest if we do not comply with his censorship orders. He did so in a secret order, which we share here to expose his actions. Moraes has chosen to threaten our staff in Brazil rather than respect the law or due process. As a result, to protect the safety of our staff, we have made the decision to close our operation in Brazil, effective immediately.”

The team further accused Judge Alexandre de Moraes of threatening the Brazilian democracy. “His actions are incompatible with democratic government. The people of Brazil have a choice to make—democracy, or Alexandre de Moraes,” the team wrote.
