Canada's outgoing Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has issued a stern warning to the newly elected US President, Donald Trump, following the latter's announcement of a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada. According to a report by CBC News, Trudeau stated that Ottawa is "willing to inflict economic pain on the US" in order to pressure Trump into backing down, adding that their response would be "robust, rapid," and "very strong."
Trudeau's remarks came just hours after Trump announced the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on imports from both Canada and Mexico, set to take effect on February 1.
"We're thinking in terms of 25 per cent on Mexico and Canada because they're allowing vast numbers of people -- Canada's a very bad abuser also -- vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in. I think we'll do it on February 1," the US President told reporters while signing several executive orders.
During a special cabinet meeting, Trudeau told reporters that he anticipated significant uncertainty following Trump's assumption of the presidency. He described Trump as a skilled negotiator who is capable of "keeping his negotiating partners off balance." However, Trudeau said they were good negotiators too.

In response to the US action, Canada is considering taking serious measures, including a potential oil export ban, if other efforts fail. On Monday, Justin Trudeau stated that his government is prepared to take further action if necessary. "Everything is on the table, and I support the principle of dollar-for-dollar matching tariffs," Trudeau said. "We are prepared for every possible scenario," he added.
